2016-5-10 · The Mitsubishi Ki-51 was an early-war low-wing monoplane intended for the light bomber/dive bomber role and was deployed by the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) for a time in the conflict - particularly during actions over China and Burma. IJA Ki-51 Sonia Imperial Japan The Mitsubishi Ki-51 'Sonia' was an Imperial Japanese Army light bomber/dive bomber used throughout the war. It first flew in mid-1939 and was initially deployed against Chinese forces and was able to operate from airfields too rough for many other aircraft. Later in the war the Sonia was used in kamikaze attacks.

The Ki-51 was designed to be a smaller version of the Ki-30, with a shorter fuselage and wingspan and an associated lighter weight for improved performance. Two fixed machine guns in the wings provided strafing capability and the aircraft was also designed for precision bombing (although it could only carry 200 kg of bombs compared to the 500 kg that could be carried by the Ki-30).
